FOXTON LOCKS ORCHARD

For many years there has been an abandoned garden on the far side of the canal near the top lock at Foxton Locks. It belonged to the lock-keeper's cottage until about 70 years ago. It become overgrown, covered with brambles and scrub, and was forgotten until 2005 when Leicestershire Heritage Apples investigated it and found an ancient apple tree, probably a lost variety, which they propagated (Calla Colossus) and are re-introducing.

Then in 2015 some volunteers led by Judith Egan penetrated the undergrowth and thought it would be a good site for a small orchard. Helped by Mark Whitfield's volunteers they are in the process of clearing the site and making it a wildlife / heritage site for the public. Some apple trees are being planted.

The progress of the project is shown in the videos.
